Το deja vu μας μπερδεύει γιατί η λογική μας λέει ότι κάτι είναι μία καινούργια εμπειρία, παρόλο που το νιώθουμε σαν να είναι ανάμνηση. Εμφανίζεται περισσότερο στις ηλικίες 15-25 και λέγεται ότι σχετίζεται με την ανάπτυξη του εγκεφάλου, ωστόσο είναι μυστηριώδες φαινόμενο, αφού συμβαίνει ξαφνικά και στιγμιαία και είναι δύσκολο να αναπαραχθεί εργαστηριακά.
Όπως εξηγούν σχετίζεται με τον έσω κροταφικό λοβό που αφορά την μακροπρόθεσμη μνήμη, αφού βοηθάει τον ρινικό φλοιό που μας λέει αν κάτι που συμβαίνει μας είναι οικείο και τον ιππόκαμπο που συγκρατεί τις λεπτομέρειες των αναμνήσεων μας.
Πολλοί πιστεύουν ότι ένα στιγμιαίο λάθος στη συνεργασία μεταξύ του ιππόκαμπου και του ρινικού φλοιού προκαλεί το deja vu. Συχνά μπερδεύουμε εικόνες που έχουμε δει σε ταινίες ή συναισθήματα που έχουμε βιώσει με αυτά που βιώνουμε εκείνη τη στιγμή.
Άλλες έρευνες προτείνουν ότι το deja vu μπορεί να σχετίζεται με ελαφράς μορφής επιληπτική δραστηριότητα που συμβαίνει στον έσω κροταφικό λοβό. Αυτό ίσως εξηγεί και γιατί οι άνθρωποι που υποφέρουν από επιληψία βιώνουν deja vu πιο συχνά.
Ωστόσο οι ερευνητές επισημαίνουν ότι το deja vu δεν είναι κάτι που θα έπρεπε να προκαλεί ανησυχία, αφού είναι μία απολύτως φυσιολογική διαδικασία, που συμβαίνει σε όλους και δεν σχετίζεται απαραίτητα με κάποια επικίνδυνη εγκεφαλική πάθηση.
